Seminars

Seminar by Sam: 2.10.25

  • The unit explores, identifies and critically reviews the processes, attitudes and understanding underlying the student’s painting practice whether developing or established.
  • It does this by encouraging, through the act of doing, an engagement with the fundamental components of the student’s painting activity where ideas are brought to fruition. The student will consider the methods and contextual issues that motivate and shape their painting practice.
  • Investigating such areas as materiality, the mark, colour, hierarchies, the painting dynamic, cultural resonances, illusion and the observed the student will unpick the factors that determine their approaches to the act of painting. The student will be encouraged to engage, discuss, and reflect throughout this investigative process as they question the nature of the painted and develop a personal studio ethos.
  • The painted is a universal language that enables the exploring, intuiting, and defining of contemporary issues and complex questions. In order to develop a toolkit for the student’s practice, they first need to go through a process of deconstruction, to critically question its components and to realise intrinsic qualities and areas to investigate further. The student will initiate a reflective evaluation of their work to date, raise questions about how they know what they know, and how differing approaches, habits, and techniques both shape and situate their painting practice. This interrogation and exploration will be through both ongoing written reflections, forming part of the reflective journal, but primarily through the processes, execution and dialogue arising through the making of their work. This unit prepares the student for Unit 2 to scope new areas for deeper enquiry.
